1. Functional Role
The primary function of the excavator's valve is to deliver pressurized oil from the pump to the various actuating components according to the operator's commands, enabling the excavator to perform a wide range of movements. For instance, it controls the lifting and lowering of the boom, the extension and retraction of the dipper stick, the loading and unloading of the bucket, as well as the rotation and travel of the excavator. At the same time, the valve also regulates the pressure and flow rate within the hydraulic system, ensuring smooth and precise operation of each movement.
2. Working Principle
After the excavator's main pump starts, it draws hydraulic oil to supply components such as the main control valve and pilot pump, ensuring that the vehicle’s entire hydraulic circuit reaches normal operating pressure. When the operator moves the control lever, it activates the pilot valve, generating a metered pilot pressure. This pressure causes the spool (valve stem) of the main control valve to shift slightly, initiating the closure of the central bypass oil passage. As a result, the negative flow signal pressure drops, prompting the main pump to increase its stroke. As the spool continues to move, the oil passage gradually opens, allowing hydraulic oil to flow—according to the spool’s position—to the appropriate actuator components, such as cylinders or motors, thereby enabling the excavator to perform various actions. Finally, when the control lever returns to the neutral position, the spool also shifts back under the force of a spring, directing the hydraulic oil through the central bypass passage back to the reservoir, while the main pump’s displacement decreases.
3. Structural Features
Excavator valves typically consist of a multi-way valve assembly, where multiple spools are integrated into a single unit. Each spool controls a specific function—such as the swing spool managing the excavator's rotation, or the boom cylinder spool regulating the movement of the boom arm. Additionally, excavator valves may incorporate specialized structural features, including components for functions like boom priority, swing priority, negative flow control, and straight-line travel.
4. Type Classification
Depending on the control method, excavator valves can be categorized into types such as manual control and electro-hydraulic control. Manual control excavator valves directly operate the valve spool via a joystick, enabling precise hydraulic oil flow control. They feature a relatively simple design and lower costs, making them suitable for smaller excavators or machines where high control precision isn't critical. In contrast, electro-hydraulic control valves use electrical signals to regulate hydraulic valve movements, offering superior control accuracy and faster response times. This allows for more complex motion control and automated operations, commonly found in larger or high-end excavators.
5. Importance
The performance of the excavator valve directly affects the machine's working efficiency, operational comfort, and reliability. A well-performing excavator valve enables more nimble and precise movements, minimizes energy loss, and boosts overall productivity—while also reducing operator fatigue and extending the equipment's service life. However, if the excavator valve malfunctions—such as valve spool sticking or leakage—it can lead to sluggish or weak movements, rendering the excavator unable to operate properly, thereby severely impacting construction schedules and the smooth functioning of the equipment.
